SFPUL Hot Printing Workshop

This workshop is inspired by the experimental typographic prints of H. N. Werkman (1882-1945), an early 20th-century Dutch artist, designer, and publisher. Werkman pushed the boundaries of letterpress printing with his unconventional technique, which he called “hot printing.”

Molly Dotson (Graphic Arts Librarian) and Ariel Ackerly (Makerspace Specialist) will provide a brief introduction to Werkman’s oeuvre and the hot printing process. Participants will then have an opportunity to print their own designs using 3D-printed letterforms on an 1840s Albion iron hand press.

This workshop is open to Student Friends of the Princeton University Library. Registration is required. All materials provided.

H.N. Werkman coined the term “druksel,” which is a play on the Dutch word "drukken" meaning “to print,” to describe his experimental artworks. These were produced as either small editions or unique prints, and they often required multiple passes through the press. Werkman’s prints transformed letterforms and other found objects into images through innovative use of composition, color, texture, etc.

Note: This workshop is modeled after the “Druksels on the Hand Press” workshop created by Jamie Mahoney, Assistant Professor and Director of the Bowe House Press at Virginia Commonwealth University, and subsequently adopted by the Lead Graffiti studio and others.
