The East Asian tradition of woodblock printing on paper dates from roughly the 7th century in China, and it spread soon thereafter to the Korean peninsula and Japan. This workshop will provide an overview of the materials, tools, and practices of historical Chinese and Japanese woodblock printing. Participants will also learn about the modern-day technologies (e.g., 3D printing and laser cutting) used to replicate select historical woodblocks held in the East Asian Library’s collection. After a brief demo, multiple replicas will be available for participants to make their own woodblock prints.
